Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and His World

Born in Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–92) experienced the modernization of Japan, including drastic changes in its politics, economy, and society. Yoshitoshi is considered the last artist to depict the urbane pleasures of Japanese society in the genre poetically known as ukiyo-e, literally “pictures of the floating world.”
