Artists from different centuries and different parts of Asia created depictions of the Buddha that are remarkably similar in appearance. That’s because within the Buddhist tradition, a set of visual conventions emerged that communicated key aspects of the Buddha’s identity and the core teachings of Buddhist belief. This carved wooden sculpture of Amida Buddha, known as the Buddha of Infinite Light in the Pure Land tradition of Buddhism, displays many of the visual conventions artists employed when depicting the Buddha.
